Just read about the newly released UN global assessment report on the current health of our planet. To say I was stunned and sickened when I read some of the findings of this report would be an understatement; the damage we humans are doing to this beautiful planet is both undeniable and heartbreaking. We are now beyond the point where we can pretend that everything is fine or indeed even recover the grave losses. All we can do now is prevent the situation from getting any worse, which scientists say will involve “drastic transformation” on all social, political, economical and individual levels. From the loss of land and natural ecosystems (47%), to the decline in global biomass in wild mammals (82%) and 25% of plant & animal species and one third of marine species threatened with extinction, we are well past the time to act. Animal agriculture and fishing are unsurprisingly the primary causes for this destruction, with meat & dairy accounting for 83% farmland, 58% greenhouse gas emissions and 57% water pollution. On top of this we have caused deforestation on a mass scale along with plastic waste and toxic run-off having a catastrophic effect on marine life. The facts are in and have been for a long time, but only now is the UN beginning to make this a political priority, which scientists say is more than well past due. I believe we all need to stop burying our heads in the sand and do more than we are currently doing on the individual level to save this precious home in which we all share. This report is not just about saving pretty wild species or “saving the planet”, but actually ourselves. Humans cannot thrive or indeed survive if many of these crucial ecosystems were to diminish entirely, so it is more than within our best interests to take action. .
